Mr. Carrier's

READ A MILLION

CHALLENGE

Mr. Carrier is excited to announce our new literacy campaign. We are asking our students, with the support of their families, to commit to our goal of reading one million words during this school year. “The more students read, the better they get at it; the better they get at it, the more they like it; and the more they like it, the more they do it.”

WHY READ A MILLION?

Over the past several decades, researchers have consistently found a strong relationship between the volume of students’ reading and their reading achievement. “There are few other ideas as widely accepted as that reading is learned through reading.” (National Reading Panel) If an older student is reading 40 minutes per day, every day, that student will read approximately 2,357,000 words per year and can expect to score within the top 10% on standardized reading achievement tests. Reading extensively broadens our world and expands our imaginations.

HOW CAN FAMILY HELP?

Please help your child read at least twenty minutes most nights by setting aside this time and showing a real interest in the books your child is selecting to read.

Because reading ability varies greatly within grade levels, the classroom teacher will assist in guiding your child to “just right” books for his/her ability. Teachers will also encourage students to select books from different genres and to include nonfiction in their selections.

Thank you for helping your children strive toward the goal of reading one million words this year. We can promise that the rewards will be great and long lasting
